6 Speakers Inspire an Interior Designer at the D&D Building

The D&D Building in New York recently hosted highlights from the Spring Market 2012: Design International. It was a very rewarding experience for me to attend, here are six speakers along with some of their work that I found particularly inspiring:

Perfectly Imperfect Home by Deborah Needleman

Perfectly Imperfect Home by Deborah Needleman

The opening guest speaker of the day was Deborah Needleman who is the Editor in Chief of the Wall Street Journal Magazine. Her book, “The  Perfectly Imperfect Home”, emphasizes designing high luxury interiors with imperfections as well as having fine things, while allowing them to breathe in a lighter way. A room could be rich or serious but by using ticking fabric it allows you to bring down or humble the space. Signs of living in a house are always beautiful to see, coats hanging in a foyer or simply draped on an antique tree stand are subtle ways in which you can add charm to any home.

Lutron Electronics

Lutron Electronics Company  hosted a seminar about “Hiding Technology”. Audio Command Systems, Inc. was the speaker; here are some of my favorite items which were featured:

  • The sub woofer for your sound system can be concealed, under the floor grill.
  • Motorized pocket doors.
  • Flush mount lighting control.
  • Flangeless stereo speakers and HVAC grills.
  • Invisible sound system speakers that are fully concealed, with plaster over the face.
  • Remote sensors for thermostat.
  • His and her televisions – two TV’s in a pop-up cabinet at the foot of the bed.
  • Personalized aromatherapy with scented pellets float in through the air vent, flavors such as lavender can be used to create a relaxing environment.
  • Banking all of the controls on one panel.
  • Window blinds with two rollers: one for cutting glare, and the other for room darkening.

Editorial Director DJ Carey of CT Cottages & Gardens along with Editor in Chief Kendell Cronstrom of NY Cottages & Gardens, were both guest speakers at the Robert Allen Design showroom. They touched on ways in which you can apply indoor/outdoor fabrics   in the most dynamic and striking ways throughout your outdoor living spaces. Currently, Ikat patterns are the dominant fabric trends; they give off a classic, yet fresh look.
