Is the outside of your home for sitting or living?

This is not a trick question.  Have you noticed more people seem to be making the outside of their home look like the inside?  Whereas a patio has traditionally been a place to find wooden or fabric chairs and a picnic table for sitting; now, it’s a place to create a full, comfortable and organic place to live.

Is this a trend? I don’t know but I can tell you if you put patio furniture outside, people sit in it.  If it’s furniture with true character and style, people live in it.  Since you spend so much on the land and landscaping around your home, shouldn’t you be able to live in it?

At the International Contemporary Furniture Fair at the Jacob Javits Center in NYC, I saw so many remarkable pieces for outside I set about creating the outdoor living area of my dreams.  Here’s what it looks like.

It starts with chairs, a side table and sculpture up top from Urban Zen Furniture Collection.  Their mission is to inspire change in well-being and that’s what these pieces do.

They look so beautiful you’d think they were for the inside.  But they’re meant for outdoors.  They create a living area that is thoroughly modern while taking you to the orient.  I feel like I could be in Bali.

I wouldn’t need a big outdoor fireplace; not when there is the Helios Fire Vessel by Stone Forest.  It turns a fire pit into high art and establishes a calm, soothing, spiritual mood; one that puts meditation before roasting marshmallows.

When the night sets in, the glow from the Martha Sturdy Illuminated Resin Club Chair above, lights up the outdoors like the moon.  It’s actually lit from inside to create a room of subtle light within a dark setting.

The ethereal chairs and lounge from Kettal Maia are a lace pattern.  They are intricate but their artisan braiding comes from sturdiness of an aluminum frame.  It stands up to whatever the outdoors may put it through and always looks totally in place with the environment. Just imagine the gorgeous shadows these chairs would make on the ground.

The Groundwork table is no ordinary outdoor table.  It looks like something you’d find in “Alice in Wonderland.”  It’s a one-of-a-kind piece that makes me smile every time I look at it.  I can’t imagine anyone not liking it.

And it’s probably one of the most organic pieces you could find; one that truly at home with its surrounding.

If you’re like me, you love the sun and fun of the outdoor but, if you’re not careful, you turn into a lobster.  That’s why I love the art and function of Gloster furniture.  With this piece, when it’s combined, it looks like a ship set to sail across the outside of your home.  Or it can be separated into two distinct pieces.  Either way, the shawl like top keeps you shaded and cool when the sun is bright and burning.

Now that we’re heading toward summer, we’ll all be spending more time outside the house.  But will you be sitting or living?

I could go on talking about the outside as well as the inside of your house.  In either place, for me, it’s still “All in the Details.”  For examples of how I turn an area for sitting into an area for living, click here.
